Berry Red Plum Smoothie
This berry red plum smoothie is thick, tangy and naturally sweet, with a gorgeous deep purple color from ripe red plums and a big scoop of frozen berries.
It also sneaks in red grapes, a couple of red cabbage leaves and a scoop of vanilla protein powder, so it is filling enough for breakfast. Everything goes into the blender at once and it is ready in under a minute.

The Best Plum Smoothie Recipe (Berries, Grapes and Protein)
We have some awesome neighbors. A couple weeks ago, they invited us to get some peaches from their peach tree. Not only did we leave with a large bag of peaches, they generously gave us the same amount in plums!
These plums were a rich, deep red on the inside and super juicy and sweet. We had been enjoying eating them plain until I had an idea! Why not make a power-packed, antioxidant rich, yummy-in-my-tummy smoothie?! And… voila!
I used coconut milk and a mix of organic blackberries, raspberries and blueberries. I add the ingredients to my Vitamix blender in the order listed and blend on high until smooth.
If the grapes or cabbage make you nervous, be brave! I made this smoothie for my husband one morning (he didn’t know about the cabbage) and he LOVED it!

Why You’ll Love This Red Plum Smoothie
- Fresh fruit flavor. Juicy red plums, red grapes and three kinds of berries make it sweet without any added sugar.
- A hidden veggie. Two red cabbage leaves blend right in with the purple berries.
- Protein packed. A scoop of vanilla whey or vegan protein powder keeps you full.
- Ready in a minute. Blend on high for 30 to 45 seconds and it is done.
Ingredients You’ll Need
Here is what goes into this plum smoothie recipe and why each one is there. Exact amounts are in the recipe card below.
- Milk of your choice: The liquid that gets everything moving in the blender. I used coconut milk, which adds a light, creamy sweetness. Almond milk, oat milk or dairy milk all work. Use an unsweetened milk if you want to keep the sugar down, since the fruit is already sweet.
- Vanilla protein powder: One scoop of vanilla whey or vegan protein powder. It adds body, a hint of vanilla and enough protein to make this a breakfast. Pick a vegan powder and a plant milk to keep the smoothie dairy free.
- Red grapes: Seedless red grapes add juicy sweetness and more of that red color. They blend smoothly and help thin the smoothie a little.
- Red cabbage leaves: Two large leaves. Red cabbage is mild, a little sweet and full of the same deep purple pigments as the berries, so it disappears into the color and flavor. Rinse the leaves and tear them into pieces so they blend smoothly. The thick white rib at the base of each leaf is the toughest part, so trim it off if your blender is not very powerful.
- Red plums: Two plums with the pits removed. Look for plums that give slightly when pressed and smell fruity. Ripe red plums are sweet with a tart skin, and that balance is what makes this smoothie taste bright. There is no need to peel them.
- Mixed frozen berries: I used organic blackberries, raspberries and blueberries. Frozen fruit makes the smoothie cold and thick without watering it down with lots of ice. Any frozen berry blend works, and strawberries make it a little sweeter.
- Ice (optional): Add a handful at the end if you want it even thicker and colder, or use extra frozen berries instead.
How to Make a Plum Smoothie
- Prep the fruit. Rinse the plums, cut them in half and remove the pits. Rinse the grapes and the cabbage leaves, and tear the leaves into a few pieces. Small pieces are easier for the blender to break down completely.
- Add the milk first. Pour the milk into the blender. Liquid on the bottom helps the blades spin freely and pull the solid ingredients down.
- Add the protein powder. Scoop it right on top of the milk so it mixes in completely and doesn’t stick to the sides of the blender jar.
- Layer in the fruit and cabbage. Add the grapes, the cabbage leaves and the plums, in that order. Softer, juicy ingredients near the bottom break down first and give the blender more liquid to work with.
- Finish with the frozen berries. Add the frozen berries last. Their weight presses everything down toward the blades.
- Blend. Blend on high for 30 to 45 seconds until completely smooth. It should be a deep, even purple with no flecks of cabbage or grape skin left, and thick enough to pour slowly.
- Adjust and serve. For a thicker consistency, add more frozen berries or ice and blend again. If it is too thick, add a splash more milk. Pour into glasses and enjoy right away, while it is still frosty and thick. Smoothies start to separate and lose their chill as they sit.
Kami’s tip: Add the ingredients in the order listed. Milk goes in first and the frozen berries go in last, which helps everything blend smooth in just 30 to 45 seconds.
Ways to Customize This Plum Smoothie
- Go all blueberry. Use frozen blueberries instead of the mixed berries for a plum blueberry smoothie.
- Add banana. Half a frozen banana makes it creamier and a little sweeter.
- Swap the greens. Use a handful of spinach in place of the cabbage if that is what you have.
- Skip the protein. Leave out the protein powder for a lighter fruit smoothie.
Plum Smoothie FAQs
- Can you make a smoothie with plums? Yes. Ripe plums blend beautifully. They add sweetness, a little tartness and a rich red color. Just remove the pits first.
- Do I need to peel the plums? No. The skins blend smoothly in a good blender and add color and fiber. If your plums have very thick or bitter skins, you can peel one of them, but it is not necessary.
- Can you taste the cabbage? The berries and plums are the main flavors. My husband drank it without knowing about the cabbage and loved it.
- Can I use frozen plums? Yes. Pit and slice ripe plums, freeze them, and use them in place of some of the frozen berries for an even thicker smoothie.
- Is this smoothie dairy free? It is when you use a plant milk, like the coconut milk I used, and a vegan protein powder.
- Can I make it ahead? It is best right after blending. You can keep it in a sealed jar in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. Shake or stir it before drinking, since it will separate.
- How do I make it thicker? Add more frozen berries or a handful of ice and blend again. Using frozen plums in place of fresh also makes it thicker.
- Can I use a regular blender? Yes. I use a Vitamix, but any sturdy blender works. Tear the cabbage into small pieces, add the liquid first and blend a little longer, stopping to scrape down the sides if needed.
