Mini Berry Cobblers: An Easy Gender Reveal Dessert
These mini berry cobblers are a sweet, simple gender reveal food idea. Raspberries mean it’s a girl, blueberries mean it’s a boy, and the golden crumb topping hides the answer until everyone digs in.
Each little ramekin is filled with berries, a blended orange and brown sugar sauce and a whole wheat cinnamon sugar crumble, then baked until golden. No dye and no boxed mix required.

The Best Gender Reveal Dessert (Mini Raspberry or Blueberry Cobblers)
I’ve been brainstorming and researching fun gender reveal recipes. However, most used dye (yuck!) and lots of sugar (I always can live with a little sugar) and were made mostly from a box (yeah… that’s not going to work for me). So I produced these little babies to help me reveal what gender my little baby is.

Well, the night before the ultrasound I had a vivid dream. In my dream, I was with my husband having the ultrasound and the sonographer announced “it’s a girl!” My husband and I headed to the ultrasound that morning both confident we were having another baby girl. I couldn’t wait to share these mini raspberry cobblers announcing we were having a girl!
The sonographer clarified one more time whether or not we wanted to know the gender. While my husband and I held hands, we assured her we wanted to know. We were anticipating “it’s a girl!” but instead we heard “it’s a boy!” As much as I loved those mini raspberry cobblers, the blueberry mini cobblers got the spotlight. We’re having a boy mid August! We’re very excited and incredibly blessed that he appears healthy and strong. Now… I seriously need your help with names! We’ve got nothin’. Why are boy names so ridiculously difficult to come up with? I think we’ll need to follow a reader’s suggestion and get a book with names.

Why You’ll Love These Gender Reveal Mini Cobblers
- No food dye. The pink or blue comes straight from raspberries or blueberries.
- A built in surprise. The crumb topping keeps the color hidden until the first spoonful.
- Not too sweet. A blended orange and a little brown sugar sweeten the fruit naturally.
- Individual servings. Every guest gets their own little cobbler to reveal.

Ingredients You’ll Need
Here is what goes into these mini cobblers and why each one is there. Exact amounts are in the recipe card below.
- Raspberries or blueberries: Raspberries for a girl, blueberries for a boy. Fresh or frozen both work. Organic berries are a great choice, and frozen berries can go straight into the ramekins.
- Orange: One large orange, peeled and blended into a smooth sauce. It adds natural sweetness and bright citrus flavor that makes the berries taste even fruitier. Pull off as much white pith as you can, since it tastes bitter.
- Brown sugar: A little goes into the orange sauce and a little into the topping. It adds a warm, caramel sweetness without overpowering the fruit.
- Whole wheat pastry flour: The base of the crumb topping. It is finer and softer than regular whole wheat flour, so the topping bakes up tender instead of heavy.
- Baking powder: Gives the topping a little lift so it bakes up light and golden instead of dense. Check that yours is fresh, since old baking powder loses its power.
- Egg white: Lightly beaten, it binds the flour and sugar into a crumbly dough that holds together in the oven. Save the yolk for scrambled eggs.
- Coconut oil: Melted, it stands in for butter and helps the topping crisp up and brown. Measure it after melting so you get the right amount.
- Cinnamon and sugar: A light sprinkle on top adds sparkle, a little crunch and a warm finish that pairs well with the berries and orange.
- Ramekins: You need four 7 ounce (200 mL) ramekins. I love my CorningWare ramekins. They bake evenly, are really sturdy and clean easily, and they conveniently come in a pack of 4 on Amazon.

How to Make Mini Cobblers
- Heat the oven. Preheat to 350°F. Lightly spray four 7 ounce ramekins with olive oil cooking spray.
- Add the berries. Scoop 1/2 cup of raspberries or blueberries into each ramekin and spread them into an even layer. If you’re using frozen berries, there’s no need to thaw them first.
- Make the orange sauce. In a blender, such as a Vitamix, blend the peeled orange and 2 tablespoons of brown sugar on high until pureed and smooth. Pour about 1/8 cup of the orange mixture over the berries in each ramekin.
- Mix the topping. In a small bowl, stir together the flour, brown sugar and baking powder. Add the egg white and melted coconut oil and mix with a fork until a crumbly dough forms. It should look like damp sand with some larger clumps, not a smooth dough.
- Cover the berries. Evenly sprinkle the dough over each cobbler, making sure the tops are well covered right to the edges of each ramekin.
- Add cinnamon sugar. Combine the cinnamon and sugar and sprinkle it over the crumb topping.
- Bake. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, until the tops are golden brown and the berry juices bubble around the edges. Let them cool for a few minutes, since the fruit will be very hot, then serve warm.
Kami’s tip: Make sure the crumb topping covers the berries completely before baking. Well covered tops keep the pink or blue hidden until the big reveal.

Ways to Customize Mini Cobblers
- Make both. Bake two raspberry and two blueberry cobblers if you’re celebrating twins or just want both flavors.
- Mixed berries. Not revealing anything? Use a mix of raspberries and blueberries.
- Top it off. Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a spoonful of yogurt.
- Other fruit. For an everyday dessert, try sliced peaches or blackberries in place of the raspberries or blueberries.

Mini Cobblers FAQs
- Can I use frozen berries? Yes. Fresh or frozen berries both work. Frozen berries may need a few extra minutes in the oven.
- What size ramekins do I need? Four 7 ounce (200 mL) ramekins.
- Do I have to use whole wheat pastry flour? It keeps the topping tender while adding whole grains. All purpose flour also works if that is what you have.
- How do I know when they’re done? The tops should be golden brown and the berry juices bubbling around the edges, after 25 to 30 minutes.
- Can I use butter instead of coconut oil? Yes. Melted butter works the same way in the crumb topping.
- Can I make one large cobbler? Yes. Use a small baking dish and bake until the topping is golden and the fruit bubbles, which may take a little longer.
- Can I make them ahead? Assemble them a few hours ahead, cover and refrigerate, then bake right before the reveal so they’re served warm.
- How do I store leftovers? Cover and refrigerate within 2 hours and enjoy within 3 to 4 days. Rewarm in the oven or microwave.
- Do the cobblers really hide the color? Yes, as long as the crumb topping covers the berries well. The color shows up with the first spoonful.

I am stuck on boys names right now too! I don’t know why boys are harder. My first I named Corbin-my husband didn’t like it at first but now he can’t imagine him with another name. But we are having a hard time finding a good name for this one-I am due in June. Jameson or Gavin is ones we have talked about. I say don’t go too crazy and weird…but I also don’t love to trendy either. Good luck and congrats! I love my little boy-he has been so fun!
Thanks, Marissa! I agree, boy names are tough. I have about 5 girl names I love, but nothing for boys. Love Jameson and Gavin! Yeah for baby boys this summer!
CONGRATULATIONS! Yay! I’m so stinkin’ excited you are having a little boy! One of each…just like us! My vote for names: Ty Jr. or Magic Mike. 🙂
Hahaha… thanks, Erin! I would have to say ‘Magic Mike’ just like I do when we play tennis. Oh, I hate his trick shots.
Yay! Congratulations Kami, I am so excited for you! A couple boy names that I like (but not my top couple – can’t share those!) are Noah, Walker and Colton. Good luck deciding!
Thanks, Aimee! Definitely keep your favorites to yourself. I do like Noah as well. I’m excited to see your little one here soon!
Congrats Kami! Boys are so much fun!! As for names, I got nothing. Xander was the only name I really loved when I was coming up with names.
Thanks, Holly! Why are boy names so ridiculously difficult to come up with?
How fun! CONGRATS! Good luck with names, that was always so hard for us. Both our boys weren’t named until right before we left the hospital…nothing like a panicked last minute decision! 😉
YAY! Congratulations! So exciting and fun to have one of each gender. Boy names are seriously so hard. Especially since my family is loaded with boys! It seemed like all the names were used up. We literally bought a book of names. We read through them and highlighted our favorites and the wrote down combinations of names with our last name. Then narrowed it down little by little. Good luck! We love your adorable little (growing) family!
Thanks, Julie! I love the name Andrew… so well done. I definitely think we’ll need to follow your suggestion and get a book with names. Process of elimination, right?
Mouth is watering! Can’t wait to try it!
And congrats on the baby boy!
